Group writing project: Writing that we love

Posted on Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 in writing Tags: ,

I’ve never tried running a group writing project before, although I’ve taken part in a couple. But inspired by a series of posts I’m writing at the moment, entitled My love affair with poetry, I thought I’d have a go.

So, tell me, what type of writing do you like best? It could be any particular style or format or genre, and related to fiction, non-fiction, poetry, blogging, journalism, or really any kind of writing at all!

I want to know what sort of writing makes you happy to read, and why. Did you always like it, and if not, why not? Is there a particular example that stands out for you? Try and get the rest of us enthused too!

Put the URL of your post in a comment by January 31st, and I’ll write a summary in the first week of February.  No prizes (I’m too broke), but I will pick and name a favourite.

Oh, good one! I’m going through a bit of writing crisis too just now, so it will be good to step back and think of what I love to read. Will do (after a long think…)

I like to read writing that gives me a hint of places I’ve never been, real or imaginary; that’s immersive, and intense, and gives me new insight on the world.

On the other hand, what I like to write is work that takes a character’s mindset and digs deep into it.

This is a great question and a great assignment. Warning: My answer won’t be a short one.

I read many books in my college lit courses, so many in fact that at one point I was reading and completing 300-400 page novels every one or two days. All the stories and characters blended together and I had no “real” time to “feel” the characters and stories. I did however realize long ago what type of writing makes me “feel.” Writing that is honest, straightforward and intense equals good writing and good reading for me. Writing that overflows with passion, specific details and emotions, writing that draws me in and captures all my senses and most importantly writing that is genuine and “different” serves as the best kind of writing. The absolute best writing comes from the heart of the writer and not from his or her mind. The words and ideas live within you and are therefore a part of you. Our writing is not designed or created; our writing flourishes and exposes itself and jumps out into the light.

My favorite fictional novel of all time is Wuthering Heights.
Only after reading that novel did I truly fall in love with words and realize their immense power.

    Thank you for this post.

I love stories. Things that you can immerse yourself in and almost feel like you are part of it. Things that make you sad when there isn’t any more, and things that actually affect your day, because of the way you feel after reading what you have read. I guess I’m a complete sucker for escapism. I also like really really good poetry. My all time favourite poem is “The Castaways, or Vote for Caliban” ( http://www.hn-ams.org/en/writings/inspiration/0.355.1.68.html ) by Adrian Mitchell, for its astute portrait of humanity, and I’ll always have a very soft spot for Keats’ “Ode to Autumn”, for its description.
