NaNoWriMo 2008 #6
Tuesday and Wednesday, I wrote very little; only just 1000 words over the course of both days. And despite another very lively and enjoyable session at Queens yesterday (featuring soon-to-be-published NI writer Stuart Neville), I had reached that terrible place. Yes, I was being blocked by the Week 2 Wall, when your novel seems like utter crap, writing seems like too much effort, and you can’t believe you’re doing this (again).
Thankfully, today I broke through that Wall, using the sledgehammer of fellow NaNovellists in our WriMo Ireland chat room and the crowbar of 10-minute word sprints.
I reached my 25,000 words – the halfway mark! – and then went on to surpass it, ending up 3 days ahead of schedule again with a pleasingly palindromic count of 26762.
So thank you all for the support today – and especially Marion, who told me I needed to put in a parrot (so I did, and named him Freddy after the potty-mouthed one in my local pet shop).

Congratulations on passing the halfway point – no mean feat indeed. Hope you don’t mind but I’ve tagged you (for when you have time). Check it out on my blog.

You’re doing great! Keep going.
Maybe call the parrot ‘Fast Freddy’ that’s one extra word, right there.

I must be tired. I was just about to leave a comment congratulating you on the new feathered family member. I read the post. Thought, I wonder how a parrot will help with writing. On the third pass, I figured it out. A parrot in the book is a wonderful idea. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Jill – I don’t think I have time at the moment (unless I need to procrastinate, which is always likely), but I will check out that tagging some time soon!
Ken: ‘Fast Freddy’, I like. The one down the shop calls himself ‘Freddy you f**ker’ all the time, which is another word again… Although the parrot isn’t actually going to feature that much in this novel except as a song critic.
Tina – oh dear on the misreading, although you did get there in the end.
I would actually love a parrot, or even a budgie, but I suspect my cats would like it even more…

If the Parrot is a song critic he should perhaps get another word in his name
‘Fast Freddy Cowell’

Just for you, Ken, I added a few words (31, to be precise) to extend this bit of dialogue:
“Great gig, loved the new stuff.”
“Did you? So did Freddy – at least, he didn’t screech too much when we were rehearsing.”
“Freddy? Matt, he’s a parrot, not Simon Cowell! Well, I suppose everyone’s a critic, even when they have feathers and a beak…”

Delighted to see you’re still making headway – I have absolutely no doubt you’ll get there now. Would love to know what else (besides the screeching feathered music critic) is involved in the story, but I suspect that’s under wraps.
