Sunday Scribblings: Happy Endings

Happy Endings
A fairytale romance:
girl meets boy (or frog, or beast).
They kiss. Magic happens.
Vows are made, bells ring,
and they live happily ever after.

But ever after doesn’t last for long.
Reality creeps in,
with interfering mother-in-laws
(although those can be sent to a swamp
or pushed into an oven);
crying children and sleepless nights;
the rows and the silences
and the threats of affairs.

If girl and prince can get through
these pieces of normal life
and still love one another as much
as when the bluebirds first sang…
Well, perhaps then they can have a happy ending.

    Ah yes, if only reality wasn’t quite so painful, there would be lots more happy endings.

    When I got married, my mother gave me a coffee mug that said “Kissin’ don’t last - cookin’ do.”
    I was rather offended at the time - that certainly didn’t apply to my fairy tale relationship!

    However, after 32 years, I see the truth in it :)

    That “happily ever after” line really was a bit of a cheat. It’s pretty likely the prince reverted to a beast after the spell of the kiss had worn off. True and lasting transformations are indeed miraculous, and maturity often means seeing past the false magic of youthful expectations. Oh, and I really like the poem :).

    happy endings need love to grow in the face of reality for sure — but love needs to grow as well - great poem!!!

    Continuing to love while living through the reality - now that’s what leads to happy endings. Nice poem. :)

    Thanks for all your comments!
    I do believe in happy endings - I just don’t believe in happily ever after. I think it takes a lot of work to get a happy ending - but that just makes it more worthwhile.

    this poem reminds me of the message behind my fairy tale poem. Would we even want it to be “happily ever after”? What about excitement?
